PASURUAN, September 7, 2025. The Bank Jatim Bromo Marathon 2025 was successfully held at Plataran Bromo on Sunday (7/9). The event, which saw participation from over 2,000 runners from both domestic and international backgrounds, was opened by the Acting President Director of Bank Jatim, Arif Suhirman; the Vice Regent of Pasuruan, Shobih Asrori; the Deputy Head of Bank Indonesia Representative Office Malang, Siti Nurfalinda; and the CEO & Founder of Plataran Indonesia, Yozua Makes. Runners were seen crowding the starting line since dawn to participate in the flag-off for various categories: 2.5K, 5K, 10K, 21K, and 42K.
Arif explained that his party was very grateful that this year's Bank Jatim Bromo Marathon proceeded safely and smoothly, with participant enthusiasm increasing year after year. “As we can see together, even though all runners had to face challenging uphill tracks that tested both energy and mental fortitude, none of that dampened their spirits. On the contrary, they remained excited to enjoy every step on the track until the finish line,” he detailed.
Furthermore, Arif expressed gratitude for the successful organization of the event, which managed to present an international-standard running competition with safety, comfort, and quality standards that continue to improve every year. “This year marks a new historical milestone for the Bank Jatim Bromo Marathon 2025. Not only in terms of the number of participants increasing compared to last year—with over 2,300 runners—but also in terms of preparation that managed to provide a better experience for the runners thanks to collaboration from various parties,” he stated.
Arif emphasized that Bank Jatim serves as a primary partner that not only provides full support but also presents integrated banking solutions. His party is committed to continuing its support for sporting activities as an effort to strengthen Bank Jatim's sustainable dedication to building an active and healthy generation. “For us, the Bank Jatim Bromo Marathon is not just a running competition, but a platform to celebrate the spirit of togetherness and the natural beauty of Indonesia. Additionally, this is our step to support sport tourism, which can have a positive impact on East Java's economy,” he explained.
Continuing the series of activities for the Bank Jatim Bromo Marathon 2025, on the previous day (6/9), Bank Jatim also launched QRIS Cross-border and branded Bromo Jeeps to support tourism in Pasuruan. Arif explained that QRIS Cross-border is an innovative payment solution that allows foreign tourists to conduct transactions in Indonesia simply by scanning the QRIS code using payment applications from their home countries that are connected to the QRIS network. Currently, QRIS Cross-border supports payments from Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The benefits are numerous. Besides being fast and practical, QRIS Cross-border supports multi-currency transactions. Foreign nationals can pay directly using payment applications from their home countries safely and transparently, with exchange rates clearly displayed on the application. The merchant network is also extensive. “We have already implemented QRIS Cross-border at this Bromo Marathon event. Food tents, drink stands, official merchandise booths, hotels, and even transportation providers at this event can accept payments via QRIS,” Arif asserted.
He mentioned this step as a form of support for the digitalization of the tourism sector, as QRIS Cross-border facilitates international tourists when transacting using only their home country's app. With the presence of QRIS Cross-border, Arif continued, Pasuruan can become a digital-friendly tourist destination. This synergy not only enhances the tourism image but also provides new economic opportunities for the community.
Furthermore, the collaboration with the Bromo Jeep community became a unique attraction. There are 100 jeep units already fitted with Bank Jatim QRIS branding, and that number will continue to grow. “With QRIS in Bromo Jeeps, tourists no longer need to worry about carrying cash. This will also drive the economy of the Pasuruan community, which depends on the tourism sector. Of course, in the future, we will continue to expand the service to more merchants in tourist areas. This collaboration is also in line with efforts to support Bank Indonesia and OJK programs,” said Arif.
The Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office Malang, Febrina, stated that the development of QRIS Cross-border continues to be expanded. In addition to the three countries, this year it has entered Japan, with trials ongoing in China and Saudi Arabia. According to her, the digitalization of payments is a vital part of supporting the tourism ecosystem. “We noted that the volume of QRIS transactions in Indonesia increased by 522 percent this year. In Pasuruan specifically, the growth was 161 percent as of last June. This shows that the community's spirit to switch to non-cash is getting stronger. Bank Indonesia hopes the collaboration with Bromo Jeeps can expand digital literacy education. Both foreign and local tourists can experience the ease of transacting at tourist locations,” she concluded.
